Every Other Day DietThe Every Other Day Diet is a diet developed by John Daugirdas in his book The QOD Diet: Eating Well Every Other Day. This diet proposes the idea that one eats relatively normally on one day, but on the second day switches to a low-calorie fast. The idea is that people will stick with a diet that allows them to eat relatively normally every other day. This concept of intermittent fasting has shown some early promise with work in mice in terms of combating disease. Additionally, there has been some work done indicating that an every other day fast might extend lifespan.

Actually, EODD is more of a healthy lifestyle plan than a traditional diet.

The Every Other Day Diet plan will teach you a different way of thinking about calories and fat and how your body processes both. Jon believes that “fat is fuel” and, therefore, it’s an essential part of our diet. Losing weight isn’t about starving yourself of most fat (let’s face it – many of our favorite foods contain ample amounts of delicious fat). Fat is part of our every day eating environment, therefore, trying to eliminate it from our life is unrealistic.

Jon believes that most diets want to program you to pretend that you don’t like such classic fatty food favorites like: ice cream, pizza and chocolate. In order to follow the diet successfully, you dutifully follow these mental commands. Then, after a short while, you begin to crave these very foods. When you slip and eat something from the forbidden fat list, you feel guilty because you “know” you’re not going to lose weight eating them.

Well, Jon believes this is bunk. A diet filled with such extreme depravity will cause you to fail every time. Instead of starvation and deprivation, the EODD diet uses what’s called Planned Varience. You will have Burn Days and Feed Days. On Burn Days, you’ll eat low-calorie foods that are high in protein and contain a good amount of carbs. On Feed Days, you get to eat whatever you want – within reason. The idea is that there’s enough variety in your diet that you are neither starving or overeating.

A key part of this diet plan is the Snapp® eating system or Snapp fitness plan. This is something new included only in the second edition of this book. Snapp stands for: Shakes, Nuts, Apples, Protein, Produce. This is a simple eating system created by Jon to help you stay on the plan without the hassle of spending hours in the kitchen preparing special diet meals. Hooray!

There are five food plans included in this diet. The Primer Plan (Beginners), The Lifestyle Phase 1 Plan (Beginners and Intermediate dieters), The Lifestyle Phase 2 Plan (Intense Fat Burning), The Extreme Plan (Bodybuilders), and The Ultimate Plan (Fitness Obsessed). If you are in the normal dieter range, you’ll be comfortable with the Primer and Phase 1 choices. You will eat Snapp foods 5 times a day, and every other day you can eat one junk food meal. Jon says that as long as you follow his recommendations to the letter, you’ll lose weight.

The last section of the book has something that many other diet books lack: A full recipe section! You get delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus shakes and snacks. While the book itself doesn’t include a detailed weekly meal plan, one of the bonus books does include one.
